Itinerary

Day by Day Itinerary

Day 1 – Memphis, TN – BBQ Dinner

On arrival in Memphis, check into your local hotel for a three night stay.  Dinner is included this evening at Central BBQ.  SLOW Smoked Hickory & Pecan – SECRET Combo of Dry-Rub Spices – 24HR All-Day Meat Marinade – NO Sauce in the Pit. Eat where the locals eat…Memphians know great BBQ. And since it opened in 2002, Central BBQ has been ranked as the number one spot for BBQ in Memphis. (D)

Day 2 – African-American History Tour – Slave Haven Underground Railroad Museum – Stax Museum – Dinner & Entertainment

After breakfast, meet your guide for a full day history tour – that includes drive by’s of the Beale street Baptist Church, Robert Church Park, Calirborne Temple, Tom Lee Park, St. Jude’s Hospital, Fed Ex Forum, BB King Historical Marker, March of the Peabody Ducks and more. There will also be free time on Beale Street for lunch on own and time for browsing the shops.

The afternoon includes a tour of the Slave Haven Underground Railroad Museum.  A walk through this antebellum home is a journey through history, revealing secrets of the past that had been kept hidden for more than 100 years. House in the Burkle Estate, it was built in 1849 by Jacob Burkle, livestock trader and bakery owner, who opened his home to help slaves escape to freedom.

Tour the Stax Museum of American Soul Music. With more than 2,000 cultural artifacts, music exhibits, video footage, and items of memorabilia, the museum is designed to preserve and promote the legacy of American soul music, particularly that of Stax Records. Located on the site of the Original Stax Records, where you can see Isaac Hayes’ blue Cadillac, Ike Turner’s Fender Guitar and a century old church from the Mississippi Delta.

Dinner is included tonight at King’s Palace Café.  This cozy little joint offering a limited menu of appetizing Southern delicacies, such as the Memphis style BBQ ribs, Fried Catfish, VooDoo Chicken or many other Cajun specialties. The dining area features plenty of room for hungry patrons, but step off to the side area for a comfortable, relaxed evening of local blues, usually featuring David Bowen, Cowboy Neil, Sensation Band, and Big Don Valentine. Day 3 – Full Day Guided Touring – Alex Haley Boyhood Home – National Civil Rights Museum

Following breakfast meet your local guide for a full day tour to include Alex Haley Boyhood Home Museum and the National Civil Rights Museum.  Alex Haley’s “Roots” had a significant impact on our country. This is where Alex Haley spent his youth with his grandparents, The Palmer House.” The house furnishings have been replicated and there are recordings of Haley describing what happened in certain rooms. The museum includes a film, exhibits, Alex’s Burial site, and provides historical information on Haley and his “Roots” journey.

You also visit the National Civil Rights Museum.  Located at the Lorraine Motel, the assassination site of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., chronicles key episodes of the American civil rights movement and the legacy of this movement to inspire participation in civil and human rights efforts globally, through their collections and exhibitions.

Tonight, dinner is included at the Cupboard Restaurant.  The Cupboard Restaurant was established in 1943. It has been a Memphis tradition for 76+ years. The Cupboard Restaurant has been a favorite of visiting celebrities to Memphis for many years. They also enjoy down-home cooking and are often tired of “road food”! The Cupboard Restaurant is the perennial winner of culinary awards. (B,D)

Day 4 – Departure
